Culinary arts are my passion - you would be amazed at how obsessive I can get over the details of food. You may walk into a grocery store and stare at a piece of beef and think to yourself, “should I get a NY strip, or tenderloin?”
Well, I look at things a little differently. When I see beef I look at the fat content, and that will tell me how many different ways I can prepare it. I also pay attention to where the beef was raised and what it was fed. This will give me an idea of the flavor of the meat. I also think about how I’m going to cook my side dishes- i.e., if I’m grilling my beef or chicken, I might want to throw some lemons and asparagus on the same grill.
The point is, that your food style has given you a unique opportunity to learn more about food. While becoming a chef- and as you develop into a more conscious eater- you will have to pick up some tricks and skills along the way. Each of these skills will help you as you expand your food style.
But, first thing’s first - you’ll need a few tools to get you started. These are the most important tools in a chef’s toolkit. If you don’t have them already, head over to the store and pick these up:
#1. One sharp 8″ inch chef knife. This will make cooking less time consuming, and give you more flexibility with how much you cook.
#2. 12″ inch saute pan, 8 qrt stock pot, 12″ inch plastic cutting board, tongs, wooden spoon, a peeler, 15″ x 12″ inch cookie sheet.
#3. And, most importantly, an appetite for learning.
This is all you need to develop your own technique. And don’t worry, through these blogs I will help you build a style that is unique to your personality, this way you’ll begin to cook like a chef in no time!
